In the quarter century since the submarine was recovered, researchers have uncovered more than 1,500 artifacts, including Lt. George Dixon’s gold watch and the famed twenty-dollar coin that saved his life at Shiloh. The remains of the eight-man crew were identified and laid to rest with full military honors in 2004.
Since then, the Hunley project has become a global model for maritime conservation, drawing scientists and historians from around the world. The submarine now stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the importance of preserving the past.
Today, the Hunley continues to reveal new insights. Each finding brings us closer to understanding her true history and inspires future generations. Her journey from the seafloor to the conservation lab has become one of ongoing study, with plans underway for a world-class maritime museum dedicated to telling the story of American innovation at sea. Saving the Hunley has shown that history’s greatest discoveries are not only about what we find, but what we learn along the way.
